Children's Dyslexia Center Central New York.
Local not-for-profit changes name but not services

Children’s Dyslexia Center Central New York replaces the name, "The Children's Learning Centers" at its Oriskany, New York location. Since 2005, the Center located on the Eastern Star Campus on Route 69 has assisted approximately 69 children from Oneida, Otsego, Herkimer and Madison Counties.

The Center’s Director, Linda Martin explains, "Our original name contributed to us being one of the best kept secrets in the region; it did not explain who we are or what we do. Helping children with dyslexia is our sole function. Our approach is multimodal and one-on-one".

Children’s Dyslexia Center Central New York provides tutoring at no charge to children from kindergarten through high school who have been diagnosed as dyslexic. Children are eligible regardless of economic status, race, religion, or Masonic affiliation. The positive impact of early intervention on the lives of these children and their families is enormous.

The curriculum used as the basis for tutoring and tutor training at all Children's Dyslexia Centers integrates principles of the leading Orton-Gillingham method. The Orton-Gillingham approach, developed in the 1920's, uses a sequential, multisensory phonetic approach.

Anyone who has, or knows, a school-age child who is struggling to keep up because of poor reading and writing skills is encouraged to contact the Center for an application.
