"Sponser-A-Child"

Well, here we are in full swing for the beginning of our fifth year. It’s been a bit of a rocky start with one scholar and one tutor unable to continue as planned but we have 17 children enrolled in the program to date; ten new and seven returning. We have four tutor-scholars and five returning tutors, two of whom are taking the advanced-tutor training. To add to the mix we have had many children and tutors staying home with flu-like symptoms, which we appreciate as we are following all safety guidelines in regard to H1N1. Despite all, we are very busy and have added more seating to our often SRO reception area.

As you know, every year we strive to have monies donated from organizations to Sponsor-A-Child. Each year we have had two or three such donations and those organizations receive periodic updates on the child chosen to be the “recipient” of such donations.

I have decided that since the majority of the funds coming into our Center come from all of you, that you should have the privilege of “sponsoring” a child and I will try to give you a bit of an update each month.

This child that I have chosen for you is Jeffrey. Jeffrey is a 14-year-old 9th grader whose parents sent in an application to the Center last fall. He is very involved in athletics and busy in after-school activities. When we did our pre-assessment, Jeffrey averaged a second-grade reading level in almost all areas.

As you might imagine, Jeffrey himself was not all that excited to be spending two afternoons a week at the Learning Center, but happily, his tutor has reported that in the last week he has taken a vested interest in his sessions and seems to be ‘on board.’

So, there it is- I hope you will enjoy hearing about ‘your child’ throughout the year, as well as updates on the center.

As always, thank you for your continuing support.
